JSH Manuscript Development Workshop 2022Building on the success in 2020 of the Journal of Southern History's inaugural Manuscript Workshop, the JSH and Rice University's Department of History are sponsoring the Second Biennial Manuscript Workshop, on the theme "Southern History and the Environment." We invite scholars, at any stage of their career, to participate in a workshop for article-length manuscripts (8,000 to 12,000 words, exclusive of notes) that address some aspect of southern environmental history, broadly conceived. For example, authors might analyze Indigenous, agroecological, maritime, riverine, military, industrial, urban, or environmental justice topics. Papers might utilize material, political, aesthetic, or intellectual approaches to the region's environmental history. We welcome submissions from any period of southern history from the colonial era to the recent past. We hope to foster dialogue, engage in scholarly discussion, and offer critical engagement with the texts the accepted scholars submit. The workshop will consist of a two-day meeting on Zoom (July 28–29, 2022) to discuss participants' pre-circulated manuscripts with each other as well as editorial staff and editorial board members from the Journal of Southern History. All authors will be expected to take part in the discussion of all papers. Applicants should submit the following materials to [email protected] by April 1, 2022:
Applicants can expect a response by May 15. Randal L. Hall, Editor, Journal of Southern History Questions?
